Joomla! 1.5 Stable Released Today PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 January 2008 15:12

All are happy in Joomville and Joomtown tonight after the long-awaited release of Joomla! 1.5 today. This version represents a major code overhaul which not only enhances Joomla's usability and extensibility for today but also sets the stage for future improvements. Visit Joomla.org for more information.

Not only does this version offer significant improvements both under the hood and in the actual drive, it also represents a unique development project with a level of developer/user community involvement that is unheard of in development circles. Witness the incredible community response to such events as the Bug Squashing weekend or the recent Doc Camp over the weekend. Massive numbers of Joomla! community members have been getting involved in development, testing, and documentation.

We'll be spending some time in tonight's meeting talking about Joomla! 1.5 and what it has to offer.

Quick Glance

Joomla! is a powerful core framework that speeds developing a website and creating functionality, but the real secret to Joomla’s power lies in the wealth of extensions (plugins) available to add capabilities and functions. Many of these extensions use a GPL license like Joomla! (free), while some are commercial (require payment).

There are currently over 2200 extensions listed at http://extensions.joomla.org. They include such functionality as dynamic form builders, directory services, document management, image and multimedia galleries, e-commerce and shopping cart engines, forums and chat software, calendars, blogging software, newsletters systems, subscription services, community sites, and many, many more.
